  • Subiect: The Second Coin Hoard of Vîrşolţ, 17th Century The paper deals with a hoard found in 1974 in the Vîrşolţ village (Sălaj district). The hoard consists of 490 silver coins stored in an earthen recipient. The coins were issued in Transylvania, Poland, Elbing, Riga, Livonia, Prussia, Hungary, Styria and Saxony. The authors give the full list of the coins and discuss briefly some of them: nrs. 456-457, 489-490. The various coins of the hoard represent a value of 1646 dinar in all. Out of this sum the Transylvanian currency represents 8.86 per cent, the polish one (together with the coins arrived here across Poland, from Elbing, Riga, Livonia, Prussia) 69.01 per cent, the Hungarian one 0.30 per cent and the two thalers of Styria and Saxony 10.93 per cent each. The composition of the hoard of Vîrşolţ follows the outlines of the hoards of Mihai Viteazul, Sadu, Suatu, Mineu and Aghireş, with the most recent coin dated, respectively in 1641, 1643, 1648, 1648 and 1651 (see foot notes 8,12). ln these the percentage of the Transylvanian currency is smaller than in the hoards of Iacobeni, Mălîncrav, Buzd, Sălăjeni, where the most recent coin(s) are dated respectively in 1629, 1630, 1635, 1635. Between 1630--1651 small and medium silver coins were issued in Transylvania in little quantities or not at all and this accounts for the small percentage of local currency in these hoards. This is smaller and smaller from 1630 to 1651 (sec. table II). · The hoard belongs to the series of 15 hoards found in the district of Sălaj or in the town of Zalău (sec foot notes 13-22). This accounts for the economic importance of Zalău, especially during the 17th century: it is a well-known fact that the money spreads from the town in the neighboring villages. The hoard was buried - same as the hoards of Suatu and Mincu - at a date after 1648, probably in 1649-1651. The hoard is kept in the Museum of Zalău.
