Rarităţi bibliofile din colecţiile Bibliotecii Brukenthal

  • Subiect: Bibliophile rarities in Brukenthal Library’s collections Samuel von Brukenthal, the governor of Transylvania during 1777 – 1787 was a great collector of many things, not only paintings but also books. At his death, in 1803 his collection of books was about 16.000, now the library has 300.000. Some of the most valuable ones are the incunabula; from these, the present work presents Hartman Schedel’s Liber Chronicarum, Nűrnberg, 1493. Another special one is Dűrer’s About the Proportions and Features of the Human Body, reeditation from 1557 in Paris and Harmonia Macrocosmica, Amsterdam, 1708, a terrestrial and celestial atlas. Among other interesting books there are a lot of illustrated ones, some belonging to the rococo style. The main features of this style were that the books contained a lot of prints, not only portraits of the authors but also pictures regarding the subject of the book, as well as other decorative designs as curtains, leaves, flowers and garlands. The works presents some details about some of these books printed in England and France during the 18th century. The Brukenthal Library also possesses a new edition of the first numbers of The Guardian, London, 1750 and The Spectator, London, 1747. The manuscripts containing parts from Koran are also something to be mentioned. There are three manuscripts belonging to the 18th century with sermons and parts of Koran, one of them quite nicely ornamented; there is also a Romanian translation of the Koran from 1912 with its new edition from 2004 in Cernauti. The authoress has just wanted to draw the attention about some interesting and beautiful books that are to be found in the Brukenthal Library.
