  • Subiect: Visits for paying homage to the emperor by the elites. Basarabian case in the first quarter of the nineteenth century The existence of a Bessarabian nobility can be confirmed by its official meetings during the first years of domination of the Russian Empire in Bessarabia. The first public assemblies of the Bessarabian nobility can be considered the one of June 22, 1814 from Chisinau. Its purpose was to delegate representatives of the local nobility to St. Petersburg. Paying homage to the Emperor by the elites of the newly annexed territories was a practice commonly used in the Russian Empire during the 18th and 19th centuries. Despite the reports regarding the successful conclusion of the visits, the problems encountered in organizing it have lasted for almost a decade. Numerous nobility complaints about the misappropriation and mistaken collection of the money needed for the visit are present in the Fund No 88 of the National Archives. Also, the desire of the nobles to be accepted in the audience by the Emperor caused conflicts with the regional officials but also disagreements with the representations of other social groups. Despite these facts, during the first quarter of the nineteenth century, the visits to St. Petersburg proved to be for the local elite a very effective tool in its communication with the Center, especially in its attempt to impose itself. in front of regional authorities.
