Rakovski and the Bessarabian issue in the early 1920s

  • Subiect: The correspondence between Christian Rakovski, the Soviet ambassador to London, and MM. Litvinov, the Soviet Deputy People 's Commissar of Foreign Affairs, which contains valuable information regarding the Romanian-Soviet relations between 1918 and 1924, is emphasized and exp/oited. In the territorial dispute at law between Romania and the Soviet Union, determined by the issue of Bessarabia, the Bolshevik leadership gradually adopted successively the following positions: (1) Romania 's communization (1918-1919); (2) the recognition of Romania 's right to Bessarabia, in exchange for the Romanian treasure that was sent to Russia by the Romanian government between 1917 and 1919; (3) the refusal of any concession regarding the Bessarabian issue (1924).
