Episcopul Mitrofan, meşter tipograf

  • Subiect: This article reveals the life and cultural activity of the great master printer and, not only, the bishop of Buzău, Mitrofan. It is said that he was born in Bonţeşti, a village situated in the former county of Slam Rîmnic, known today as the Cârligele village, Vrancea county, and died somewhere around Buzău in the year 1702. Mitrofan was not only a great printer, skilled technician in the art of printing but also a complex cultural personality, multi language translator, versificator, corrector and engraver. Due to these multiple occupations, he greatly contributed to the brightness of the Brâncoveanu era culture. He was elected by Constantin Brâncoveanu as bishop of Buzău at 1 O June 1691, a duty that he had accomplished for eleven years. In the first months of his activity he made a new princely printing house. The books that issued from Mitrofan's skilled hands were distinguished by the good taste of the decorative patterns and illustrations in combination with the text and by elegant page trimming. In his 23 years of printing activity, priest Mitrofan of the Bisericani monastery, was in turn, bishop of Huşi and Buzău, the founder of 3 printing houses, personally printing 18 books, 5 of them in rumanian language. Mitrofan was a great cultural personality who fulfilled a cultural revolution through his actions for giving the natural role of the roumanian language in the life of the people.
