Altare semicirculare la biserici de lemn sălăjene

  • Subiect: Semicircular Altars in the Wooden Churches from Sălaj The Sălaj district bas a number of 71 wooden churches. Typologically these edifices are divided into: pronaos, naos and an altar with a polygonal apsis. Exceptions are the wooden churches from Bulgari (built in the 16th century) and Chiejd (built in the second half of the 18th century) where we meet an unhooked semicircular apsis. The walls of the altars of these wooden churches are built in circular beams in the form of a rim, which are fixed in joining with „hooks" without using any pegs. The shingle roof of the two altars sustained by rafters fixed with pegs, is profiled in a semicircular shape to the roof ridge and polygon ally flaring to the foot. At this shingle roof with slopes, the water-throwers fixed on rafters with pegs, play an important part. The vaulted altars are made with the help of a special arch which sustain the boards out of which the vault is formed. It corresponds both to the canon of church and to the technique of building in wood, where the suggestive possibilities of modelling the wood, play an important part. The two semicircular wooden altars from Bulgari and Chiejd, although unique of their kind, they perfectly join the edifices whose component parts prove the masters 'skill in building them.
