O ediţie de lux franceză din anul 1931 din colecţia bibliotecii Alexandra Sturza: "Macbeth" în viziunea lui Albert Décais

  • Subiect: Shakespeare's works are famous in France especially due to translations by Victor Hugo, Andre Gide, G. Duval, published by Flammarion, Vogel, Pléiade. The interest of the French illustrators was not as elevated as the translations world have required. Dressa ornamented the Vogel 1921 edition of "Anthony and Cleopatra", and the letters were carved in wood by Llano Fronz. Instead, other editions reprint the English illustrations created by Simmons (30 illustrations of trichrome engraving) Linton James (35 il. col. hors-texte), W. Hatherell (il col. hors-texte). An interesting aspect was noted in the work of Gordon Ray "Illustrators and Books in England from 1790-1911" (published by the Morgan Library, Oxford University Press, 1976), that is, the small number of illustrated Shakespeare works existing in Great Britain. Gordon Ray cites only one work illustrated by Arthur Rackham with colored lytographies. There was no illustrated Shakespeare work at the 1973 exhibition "Art. of the Printed book" organized by Joseph Blumenthal, and al the 1976 Morgan Library exhibition, only "A Midsummer Night's Dream" was present, illustrated in woodcut, published by W. Heinemann in 1908-1909, at Ballantyne. In this context, Albert Décaris' illustration for "Macbeth" published al the Fuseau, in 1931, appears as exceptional.
