Controverse istorice. Lupta de la Valea Albă - 1476

  • Subiect: Against over 150.000-200.000 men, the army of Sultan Mahomed II the Conqueror of Constantinople, Stephen the Great was opposing merely 12.000 soldiers, the rest of his up to 40.000 men army being on a two weeks leave to prepare their households for the tatar invasion. In this situation Stephen wasn't planning on a decisive battle with the Ottomans, but rather on some small but numerous guerrilla actions, to reduce the number of the attackers. On the afternoon of July 26, 1476, the Ottomans were surprisingly attacked in two waves by the Moldavian Army, being forced to retreat towards Cetatea Neamţ, citadel, in the vicinity of which lay the majority of the Turkish Army. Upset with the retreat, Mehmed himself led the battle with his entire Army. Facing the facts, Stephen the Great proceeded to his retreat into the thick woods as planned, taking advantage of the falling night. Hence the impression of the historians and chronicler of his times that Stephen the Great was defeated.
