Ateneul român

  • Subiect: The necessities of a continuously developing cultural and social life in Bucharest brought to the foundation of several cultural societies, throughout the 19th century, among which the Romanian Athenaeum was the most important and the most active. By its accurate and diversified activities in the fields of arts, socio-psychology, sciences, this society - its initiators - had their imposing headquarters built in Bucharest: an elegant French-style edifice made according to the plans of the architect Albert Galleron. The edifice was to become, in time, a symbol of the city, with an effervescent cultural life. The building process, the embellishment, the completion of the Romanian Athenaeum went on for several stages, becoming, thus, the outcome of a few generations of country loving patriots.
