  • Subiect: The Phalera, a Category of Objects Having Different Functions The aim of this debates dedicated to the phalera is not that of pointing out the wrong aspect of a unique functionalist interpretation, but to present the many ways in which they could be used as well as the complexity of their various significances. The literary sources and the iconographical representations allow to identify the phalera as ornamental elements of the harness and in the same time as prestigious distinguishing marks of some mythical (Siddhartha) or historical (Vercingetorix) characters. Apart from their function as the ornamental elements of the harness or as medallion set on the breast plates or shields or garment, the ornamental discs made of precious metals had both a decorative and symbolic role.
