Un depozit de falsuri după monede poloneze şi maghiare din prima jumătate a secolului al XVII-lea descoperit la Oradea / A Stash of Fake Polish and Hungarian Coins from the First Half of the Seventeenth-Century Found in Oradea

  • Subiect: This paper presents a hoard of Polish and Hungarian counterfeit coins discovered in 1960 in the vicinity of the Oradea fortress. Based on the coins kept in the MTCO’s numismatic collection, the deposit consists of 1,900 counterfeit Polish coins (półtorak) and another 11 counterfeit Hungarian denarii, both original coins - prototypes - being issued in the first half of the XVIIth century. Alongside these low-quality counterfeit coins with random and meaningless inscriptions, there is also a counterfeit Hungarian denar, which bears the royal title of Ferdinand Ist Habsburg, the mark of the Kremnica mint and the year 1562. All these counterfeit coins were made up of copper, some bearing traces of a whitening process through tinning (applying a thin layer of tin on the surface of the coin, which gave the counterfeit a light gray tint, imitating silver). Seven pairs of dies were used in the minting process for the półtorak and another three pairs for the Hungarian denarii.
