Un boier luminat călător prin Europa - Dinicu Golescu

  • Subiect: At the beginning of the 19th century some Romanian landowners had the opportunity of travelling into European space. One of them, Dinicu Golescu, becomes the model (the prototype) of the lucid, relevant spirit by noting down the voyage impressions concerning the social, political, economic and cultural realities during his European periplus. The exceptional contribution of "Însemnare a călătoriei mele" comes from making the institutional, political and mental backwardness painfully aware. This first Romanian voyage diary shows an acute discrepancy between the Romanian space, condemned by an unscrupulous administration to poverty and primitivism and the civilized and prosperous Europe. Dinicu Golescu was not satisfied only to underline the contrasts between the European realities and the Romanian realities but he also suggested some improvement of the local living conditions. He also proposes the development of the means of transportation on land and on water, taxing directly proportioned with the personal wealth, the development of the education, taking over the monastery possessions, the stimulation of industrial activity, the opening of Romanian theatres, the building of hospitals. His journey taken around the years 1824-1826 in Transylvania, Hungary, Austria, Italy and Switzerland offered him a new vision on the development of Romanian society. His intellectual contacts with the west, his liberal ideas favoured the growth of the new generation concerned with the modernisation of the Romanian society. Because of a favourable international context which was the European Revolution of 1848, this generation had the opportunity of a decisive (crucial) contribution including the Romanian Countries into the orbit of modernity.
