Observatori francezi despre naţionalităţile din Transilvania pînă în 1848

  • Subiect: This paper's aim is to reveal the image of Transylvanian society for French. The characteristic of the province is the concentration of the people in ethnic communities. The model described by French texts revealed a territory divided into three parts, according to national criteria: nobility districts, "saşi" and "secui". Finally, the Romanians are everywhere, "an unimportant majority" strengthened by tradition and language and remembering of the Roman grandeur. The permanent dispute between ethnic communities especially between Hungarians and "Saşi" or between Hungarians and Romanians gave a panoramic view for conquerors, defeated and strangers. This model is completed by a social hierarchy resembling the ancient French regime. In 1846 Hippolyte stated about Cluj population: "The Hungarian – the nobility, Germans - commercial bourgoise, and "valahii" the working people - majority. Each of them having different rights, living separately, having different moral points of view; "valahii" are despised unjustly by the others".
