Patronii Coloniei Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa

  • Subiect: Today we can know nine clarissimi viri patrons of Sarmizegetusa: D. Terentius Scaurianus and D. Terentius Gentianus; M. Sedatius Severianus and M. Sedatius Severus Iulius Reginus; C. Curtius Iustus and C. Curtius Rufinus; M. Claudius Fronto and M. Claudius Fronto Neocydes; P. Orfidius Senecio. All these received this function in the second century, some of them (Severianus, Curtius Iustus, Fronto) while they were just governing Dacia. From the next century we know only two patrons, members of the equestrian order: the two Quinti Axii Aeliani - father and son. Sarmizegetusa didn't look for relations outside of Dacia, it had chosen patrons among the governors and the procurators of the province. The evolution of the municipal patronage at Sarmizegetusa illustrates also the growing of the tension between the emperors and the senatorial order in the third century of our era.
