O campanie militară arabă la Dunăre în toamna anului 718. Noi consideraţii pe marginea unui pasaj din Paulus Diaconus, Historia Langobardorum VI, XLII

  • Subiect: In the fall of 718, after failing to besiege Constantinople (August 717-September 718), the Arabs undertake a military campaign against the Bulgarians from “across the Danube”, the allies of the Byzantine Empire. The forces disembarked against the Bulgarians were defeated by the latter. A violent storm destroys most of the Islamic fleet, the military action ending in a real disaster. The region targeted by the Arab campaign was, most likely, the Danube’s mouths area, which presented a particular strategic and military importance. By controlling it the Arabs could interrupt Constantinople’s connections with its possessions in Crimea and could exert a strong pressure on the two allies of the Byzantine Empire: the Bulgarian Khaganat in the Balkan Peninsula which occupied the territories between Danube and the Balkan Mountains and the Khazar Khaganat in the Northern Black Sea.
