Propuneri în vederea restaurării unui ştergar de perete

  • Subiect: The paper refers to a piece of ethnographic textile, purchased 55 years ago from Ostrov, representing a towel embroidered with Romanian ornaments. Description: rectangular piece (360 x 55 cm), horizontal loom weaving technique in two threads, mixed decor, stylized, anthropomorphic and zoomorphic ornaments. The central area has a lack of ornamentation; the decorational motifs are only placed in three registers symmetrical to the middle of the piece. They are framed by narrow strips and the piece is bordered by a band of Iace at the ends. The piece is remarkable from the point of view of the heterogeneity of the materials incorporated: cotton warp, silk weft, the ornamentation of the registers is done with dyed wool yarn and the separation strips are woven with cotton and metal thread. The Iace from the edges is made of cotton on mechanical equipment. Chromatics are enhanced by the contrast between the background with white middle and beige sides and the colourful accents in red, cyclamen, blue, green, white and black. The Iace at the ends of the towel is white. Being a piece with a strong visual impact, it has found its place in the Open Air Exhibition, being displayed on the southern wall of the house Ostrov. The permanent character of this exhibition gives the visitors the opportunity to admire the Romanian village throughout the year, but alsa subjects the heritage to very demanding conservation conditions: variations due to temperature cycles alternating day I night or the succession of the four seasons, the high level of humidity due to the presence of vegetation and proximity to the lake Herăstrău, noxious pollutants discharged as vehicles pass by and natural sun radiation. Keeping the textile piece in this type of environment has caused over time a certain level of degradation requiring conservation intervention, in other words, restoration. The piece presents embrittlement: ruptured silk yarn, wool and metal. Ripped portions are alsa found in the Iace that frames the two ends. The piece presents severa! interventions to stop degradation, some neatly executed by chromatic reintegration in the striped area and in the lace portion; but others unsightly, which weakened the seams of the edges by aesthetically stitching diagonally. These latter interventions have produced serious deviations from the flatness of the fabric, now crinkled due to the mentioned procedures. These issues being presented, I consider opportune the consolidation of compatible support of the degraded areas, I would opt for filling the gaps ofthe ripped Iace with a mesh network, as discreet as possible, using crochet hook or needle.
