Prezenţa elanului (Alces alces Linnaeus) la Movileni, judeţul Vaslui

  • Subiect: Elk fossils are rather frequent in Romania, originating either from Pleistocene, or in majority, from Holocene localities. A partially damaged elk antler was recently found in the alluvia of Hreasca valley, at Movileni (Vaslui District). This locality yielded not very long time ago Pleistocene steppe bison fossils. In this case, it is rather difficult to coin if the elk antler is Pleistocene, or Holocene. Its subfossil condition is obvious. Once, the elk was part of the Romanian autochthonous fauna, but after 17th century it became extinct, probably due the hunting overkill. Actually, during the severe winters, elk individuals make episodic incursions in the Romanian Carpathians, coming from northern areas. According some opinions, in Moldova the Elanul valley, could got its name from this cervid. However, this name origin is not enough supported by enough evidence.
