Conacul mic şI parcul de la Buftea al familei Ştirbey

  • Subiect: In the 19th century Bibescu-Ştirbey boyard family gave Wallachia two important rulers who happened to also be brothers: George D. Bibescu (1842-1848) and Barbu D. Ştirbey (adopted by his uncle in order to take over Ştirbey legacy and name, ruled between 1849-1853, 1854-1856). The latter one impressed Bucharest by having his residence in Podul Mogosoaiei (now Calea Victoriei) renovated by a foreign architect, Michel Sanjouand, adopting neoclassical style and acquired in 1845 an important estate close to the capital, Buftea. Buftea estate lies in a wonderful natural environment - that used to be part of an important forest called Codrul Vlăsiei - and has a view to Colentina Lake; during the years it has been the setting of numerous hunting, riding, wandering, sports and high life events. The article brings to public attention new discoveries in the archives regarding a (neo) classical pool-fountain built in 1844 (no longer existing today) by Barbu D. Ştirbey and a small house also in neoclassical style. Based on the style and on the fact that Barbu D. Stirbey also founded a church in the village close to Buftea in 1850, my hypothesis is that this residence was his. The fortunes of Buftea and of Ştirbey family across three generations - continued by princes Alexandru B. Ştirbey (1837-1895) and Barbu Al. Ştirbey (1872-1946) - until the second world war have been interdependent: they founded/built a cottonwool factory, cannery, dairy farm, mill, greenhouses, gardens, hospital, schools, train station.”
