Extragere, transformare şi comodificare a naturii în context imperial şi post-imperial. Incursiuni preliminare în istoria căii ferate Salva-Vişeu

  • Subiect: Extraction, transformation and commodification of nature in an imperial and post-imperial context. Preliminary explorations in the history of the Salva-Vişeu railroad This article explores the history of the development of the Salva-Vişeu railway and its impact on the rural communities of Sălăuţei Valley. The context highlights the efforts to consolidate the Romanian statehood in which the region was incorporated with the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Because the history of this railway cannot be separated from the extractivist reasons behind its design and construction, the article also explores the region’s history from the perspective of natural resource exploitation (wood in particular) and the importance of transport to maximize production and profits. We will focus especially on the last stage of the construction of this railway, in 1948–1949 by examining a series of documents from the Bistriţa-Năsăud County Archives, a collection of photographs from the site, made by the engineer Clement Ştefan, and a series of oral history interviews conducted mostly within the Salva-Vişeu 1949: Then and Now project, initiated and coordinated by Olga Ştefan during 2020. As can be seen from the text, this article does not represent the final concretization of a specific research, but solely the first stage through which a new horizon of research and analysis can be opened in view of a future more comprehensive article.
