Octavian Tăslăuanu şi Primul Război Mondial. Campania din Galiţia

  • Subiect: Octavian Tăslăuanu and the First World War. The military campaign in Galicia. Octavian Tăslăuanu represents the paradigm of the Transylvanian intellectual who didn't show attachment to the myth of “the good emperor”, that the imperial court in Vienna insistently promoted, but spoke in favor of the national ideal of the union between Transylvania and Romania. As an Austro- Hungarian citizen he was mobilized in the Austro- Hungarian army and distributed on the Galician front against the Russian opponent. The itinerary of troops under his command emphasizes an almost continuous defence. The long and tiring marches under the impact of cold climate of the autumn, the pursuit of the Russian enemy, the infernal noise of the artillery and the grenades, the injured’ screams are constant concerns of his presence on the battlefield. He makes sociological observations while describing the crisis of conscience of the Romanian soldier. He confesses the fact that he didn’t meet any Romanian warrior to be enthusiastic about the cause they had to fight in any battlefield. They simply conformed with the court's order to mobilize and move on the front, because of the imperial command. The brutalized Romanian soldier faces two serious threats. The duty and the imperial command send him to death, while the sense of self-preservation leads him to survive the war, but the fear of death penalty of not fulfilling the commandment threatens the precarious balance. His involvement in the Galician Campaign has a happy ending because on 29th November 1914, he leaves the battlefield with the consent of the officials and the doctor's advice, after a three month period of sufferings and deprivations. Returning back home to his loved ones, he decided to stop fighting under the banner of the Habsburg Empire and take refuge in Romania.
