Obiecte de cositor din Sălaj

  • Subiect: Tin Items from the Sălaj Disrict The paper deals with the products of a trade that, in this country, is yet to be studied: the tin items. The tin, in alloy with others metals, was the material for various items for household, church or decorative use. They were made by casting the molten tin (or tin alloy) into molds. The ornamentation is done by engraving or, sometimes by casting. The products bear artisan or workshop marks: they vouched for the quality of the alloy. The marks allow us to know which master or workshop produced the items. The cast ornamentation is not a sure basis for attributing the product to a certain workshop. The brass molds, used for casting, were very expensive and the same mold could be used by several workshops, during a long time. The tin items dealt with in the paper are classified by workshops and in chronological order. The artisans represented by artisan marks are not identified The paper deals with items produced in workshops of Cluj only.
