Tezaurul de manete thasiene de la Petrindu (jud. Sălaj)

  • Subiect: THE HOARD OF PETRINDU The paper deals with a hoard of 24 Thasian tetradrachms and an imitation of a Macedonia I tetradrachm, discovered in 1972 in the neighborhood of Petrindu village (Sălaj district). The hoard is kept in the Museum of History and Art of Zalău. After a concise description of the coins (they belong to the Dionysos-Herakles type) the authors discuss briefly the opinions about the chronology of the coins and about the obverse and reverse image (these problems are discussed in detail in the bibliography referred to in the footnote 1). The Thasian coins of Dionysos-Herakles type were in circulation in Dacia between cca 130-90 B.C. Up to now some 70 hoards and 51 stray finds are known in Dacia (see footnote 7). These account for an intensive circulation of these coins in Dacia. Their penetration in Dacia was forwarded by a severe silver crisis in Dacia at that time (see foot note 9). In exchange for the Thasian coins Dacia exported, beside various secondary items, gold, salt and slaves (see footnote 10). The flow of Thasian coins in Dacia (as well as that of the Macedonia I tetradrachms) put an end to the late Dacian coinage, represented at the time by the so called west Transylvanians and Hunedoara issues (see footnote 11).
