Vexilaţii ale legiunii a V-a Macedonica la Drobeta în secolele III-IV e.n.

  • Subiect: VEXILLATIONS OF THE ·LEGIO V MACEDONIA AT DROBETA IN THE 3rd-4th CENTURY In the collection of the Muzeul Portile de Fier of Drubeta there are 145 tile stamps belonging to legion V Macedonica. These tiles represent the 2/3 of the total number of tiles kept in the museum. They show a single type: L V M with four variants which differ from another only by the size of the letters, by the form of the cartridge (fig. 5/1; 6/1-3). Typologically this tile-stamps resemble those found at Potaissa (Turda) where the Legion V Macedonica was stationed between 167-275 (fig. 3). But they are identical! with the tiles discovered in the Roman-byzantine fortress of Sucidava as well (fig. 4). This tiles are dated in the period between Aurelianus and the military reforms of Diocletianus. This fact pleads for the dating of the tile-stamps of Drobeta in this period. Some researches attributed these to the period of Dacian-Roman wars (101-106 A.D.) when the legion would have participated in the building of the bridge across the Danube. However the differences between the tile-stamp of the period of stationing at Oescus (up to 106) and Trosemis (106-167 A.D.) (fig. 1-2) are obvious in this later period even the abbreviation of the legion's name is different: LEG V MAC. It is generally believed that after Aurelianus' retreat from Dacia, there was a vexillation of the legion XIII Gemina et Drubeta. But epigraphical and stamps evidences are lacking except for a tile stamp dating from this period and kept in the Muzeul Porţile de Fier: LEG(io) XIII G(emina) P(ontibus). The tile was made at the place called Pontes, the southern bank of the Danube. The existence of a greatest number of tile-stamps LVM is an evidence of a building activity, as well of the presence of the unity at Drubeta. The unit carried out repairs at the roman camp and at the thermae. Such tile-stamp have been discovered also at the civil settlement at Drubeta and in its necropolis.
