Up close and personal: an intimate approach to the Gumelniţa figurines

  • Subiect: In this paper I focus on the quality of the material culture to engage us on a very personal and intimate level; on the imprint of the individual actors onto the objects, as opposed to the collective work involved in the formation and use of public space, monuments and representations. By discussing the capacity of miniature anthropomorphic figurines to both enter in the intimate surrounding, and to foster intimacy, I suggest that because they were immersed in the routine of everyday life, constantly exposed to the gaze and/or touch of the inhabitants of the dwellings, it is fruitful to look at them as a choice media of social negotiation.
