Epigrafie şi etimologie: despre originea cuvântului cătun în limba română

  • Subiect: Epigraphy and etymology: on the origin of the word „cătun” in the Romanian language According to linguists, the Romanian word cătun is of Dacian origin; the argument supporting this would be the existence of a corresponding (similar) word in Albanian: ketun. The author of this article notes the presence in the Romanian provinces of the Danube area (Moesia, Dalmatia, Pannonia, Noricum), in the Western ones (Germany, Gallia) and in North Africa of some rural settlements, with the name of castellum, attested epigraphically; the inhabitants were called castellani (see CIL, III, 7821 = IDR, III/3, 383, from Alburnus Maior; see also CIL, VIII, 8710 from Mauretania: k(astellani) B (- - -). The author proposes the etymology: (ad) castellanos > castellan (-) > castlan(-) > catlan(-) > caton (-) > catun > cătun: Therefore, the villagers of Dacia and Moesia, living in the hill and mountain areas, inherited the word from the Latin lexicon; through the „Blaques” from the South Danube, the word also passed into Albanian.
