Declanşarea scandalului privind „afacerea Škoda”

  • Subiect: Triggering the "Škoda Business" scandal Through the "open gates" policy, one of the objectives of the National-Peasant Party was the modernization of the Romanian army in terms of weapons and ammunition for war. Thus, a contract was signed with Škoda on 17 March 1930. This was the trigger for the Škoda business, as it was known at the time. If it was not a political stake, the "Škoda business" would probably never have been brought to the attention of the public. With the help of the "Škoda business", Charles II tried to compromise the uncompromising peasant leader, Iuliu Maniu , an approach that was doomed to failure. Eventually, everything was covered up, and after the scandal was extinguished in July 1934, Gheorghe Tătărescu's first neo-liberal government took steps to establish a new arms and ammunition contract with the same company "Škoda". In the middle were Romania's commitments to the Czechoslovak state, within the Small Agreement.
