Portretul lui Jan III Sobieski, regele Poloniei, de Johann Säger (1717)

  • Subiect: Portrait of Jan III Sobieski, king of Poland, by Johann Säger (1717) The posthumous triumphal portrait of King Jan III Sobieski of Poland from the collection of the Brukenthal National Museum in Sibiu (whose identification, attribution and datation is provided by the cursive inscription in German on the panel on which the work is glued, coupled with the monogrammed signature and dating on the front side and some iconographic details) is due to the Viennese miniaturist Johann Säger, unknown through other works. The portrait seems that it was made by adjusting the main elements of Jan II Kazimierz physiognomy (the more reduced corpulence, long hair or, eventually, the allonge wig, even the strabismus), taken probably from a portrait, or maybe an engraving. Even only of documentary value, this portrait represents a proof of the popularity which Jan III Sobieski, the liberator of Vienna, enjoyed long after his death in the Viennese environment. Its presence in this collection shows also that, even it is not known exactly when and in which conditions it was purchased, its documentary value was recognized and that in Transylvania the King of Poland was revered too as a hero, as the victor of the Ottoman army and the protector of the Christian Europe.
