Activitatea artistului Şerban Zainea la Banca Naţională a României

  • Subiect: The work of the artist Şerban Zainea at the National Bank of Romania Şerban Zainea was born on September 23rd, 1907, in Braila. In 1932 he graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest, having been the student of Camil Ressu. He took painting classes with professor Felice Carena at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence between 1934 and 1936. He also attended specialisation courses in design and engraving at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under professor Ferdinand Lorber between 1937 and 1938. In the interwar period he took part in several editions of the Official Art Salon (Exhibition), in the painting and sculpture section, as well as in the graphic arts section. In 1937 he started working at the Stamp Factory and in 1940 he made his first legionary postage stamp designs. In 1941 he was employed at the National Bank of Romania, where he will carry out laborious activities for alsmost three decades. He is the author of hundreds of drawings and drafts for banknotes and of 118 stamp designs. Having been a good engravor he became known for the the taille-douce (intaglio) banknotes and stamps printing technique. Besides his work for the National Bank of Romania, he also realised projects for various bills (bonds for the Savings Bank, cheques, PRONOSPORT (sports bets) and lottery bills) and for passports and identifications cards for the State Council. After his retirement from the National Bank of Romania in the 1960s, he started exhibiting in galleries. He died in 1990 in Bucharest.
