Activitatea de mecenat a lui Constantin Brâncoveanu reflectată prin prisma cărţilor de patrimoniu ale Muzeului Naţional de Istorie a României

  • Subiect: The cultural patronage of Constantin Brancoveanu as reflected by the heritage books of the National Museum of Romania Prince Constantin Brancoveanu invested great part of his fortune in the cultural patronage, protecting, supporting and strengthening all Romanians in the orthodox faith. The printing of religious books translated in Romanian developed considerably during Brancoveanu’s rule thanks to the activity of Antim Ivireanu and of the brothers Greceanu. One of the monasteries founded by Brancoveanu is the Hurezi monastery, to which the prince gave numerous endowments, comprising valuable cult objects and vast properties. Such a donation is the Greco-Romanian Gospel printed by hieromonk Antim Ivireanu in 1693 at the princely typography in Bucharest. The author of the prefaces is Serban Greceanu. The book is bound in beautiful golden covers adorned with canonical scenes, which were made at the expenses of the donor in the workshop of craftsman Sebastian Hann of Sibiu. The Greco-Romanian Gospel was meant to be used during the divine service in the church of the Hurezi monastery. Presently, it is displayed in The Historical Treasure, one of the permanent exhibitions of the National History Museum of Romania.
