Scurte consideraţii asupra unor piese sculpturale romane provinciale din judeţul Sibiu

  • Subiect: Brief comments on some roman provincial sculptures from the Sibiu county During the field research and the study of some archaeological collections in Sibiu, undertaken in the years 2002-2009 by the Brukenthal National Museum of Sibiu and the Institute for Transylvanian Cultural Heritage in European Context of the “Nicolae Lupu” Faculty of History and Heritage of the “Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu, various unpublished Roman provincial sculptures and epigraphic monuments were discovered or more intensively studied in terms of the information they convey. Their study contributes to a better understanding of the Roman life in Southern Transylvania. Some of these interesting artefacts are: a so-called (in the Romanian archaeological literature) “column bearing lion” (leu stilofor) of white-gray limestone, walled in the wall of the Evangelical (Lutheran) vicarage’s courtyard towards the national road in Apoldu de Sus / Großpold /Nagyapold (Sibiu county), a free standing funerary lion”, made of calcareous sandstone from the fortified church of Iacobeni / Jakobsdorf / Jakabfalva, or a provincial Roman statue made of limestone (Fig. 6 a-d) was discovered in 2005 in Valea Viilor / Wurmloch / Nagybaromlaka.
