  • Subiect: French emissaries to the court of the Grand Seigneur. Case study: François Savary de Brèves and the 1604 french-ottoman capitulations The History of the diplomatic relations between France and the Ottoman Empire dates back in the early sixteenth century, and it is consacrated by a series of treaties and capitulations, which according to the customary Ottoman model, there was a document that recorded the existence of a pact between the two states, named ´Ahdnâme-i Hümâyûn (''The Imperial Book of Agreement''). The mediation that usually led to the signing of such a treaty was made by an emissary, a diplomat that in many cases used to be the representative of the French King in the Ottoman Empire, that had, afterwards, the mission to oversee if the stipulations of the treaty were respected.
