Nicolae Iorga şi Neamul Românesc la Iaşi

  • Subiect: Nicolae Iorga and his journals in Iassy In 1916, forced to abandon neutrality, Romania became an ally of the Allies and on August 14/27 1916 it declared war against the Central Powers. Due to military deficiencies and due to the lack of the promised support of the Allies, although Romanian soldiers proved heroism, on mid November 1916, Romania, lost Dobrougea and Oltenia, and Bucharest was about to be occupied by the Germans. At the beginning of November 1916 enemy armies crossed the Danube approaching Bucharest. As a result the Council of Ministers decided to transfer the Government to Iasi. As a result, on November 12/25, ministries and central authorities with logistics and officials picked up the trains, setting off for Moldova. Iasi was quickly transformed into a large urban center with more than 400.000 inhabitants. Starting with December 6, 1916, Iaşi became the capital of Romania, a ”war capital”. Without any doubt, an urban agglomeration like this needed, information - that is written press. Out of the periodicals edited in Iaşi at the time when it became the capital of the country we selected only two of them - constituting good examples. It's about Neamul Românesc and Calendarul Neamului Romanesc. Each of these publications, in addition to the news from the front dealt with various aspects of daily life, without neglecting the practical sides of the inhabitants’ existence. It was but natural that Nicolae Iorga, the great historian, the very good teacher, the scientist, put his personal touch on the pages of the periodicals. Also the pages of periodicals included literary original creations or translations. An important role was given to the patriotic and political writings. This way the readers were both well informed and educated which every good periodical should do.
