Cinabrul – pigment mineral în arta decorativă românească

  • Subiect: Cinnabar – mineral pigment in Romanian art decorations Until the 19th century, artwork making in Romanian Orthodox iconography leads also to the concept that image is a decorative design. In this framework, the red inks - as suspensions of pigment -, and the red pigments - as mixtures with a binder -, were long -term dedicated materials for miniature manuscripts /printed books and in icon making. The most common red pigment used for writing and decoration was cinnabar, the red mercuric sulfide (HgS). In Romania, cinnabar thermal mineralization was related to the Neogene magmatism; these ores are penetrating through the rifts within Cretacic formations. Usually, mineral pigments include stable chemical compounds that retain features from the metals of provenance. Yet, the appearance of the cinnabar painted layer surface is sometimes affected by its chemical stability. A broader characterization for cinnabar-based inks and pigment layers leads to identifying the specific parameters for degradation proce-sses within the historical objects.
