THE BEGINNING OF THE PURGING PROCESS IN THE NORTHWESTERN COUNTIES OF ROMANIA (1944-1945) Started by the Soviet authorities immediately after the administrative taking over of this territory, the cleansing process in the northwestern counties took place in what is so-called „the process of the administrative rejoining of northern Transylvania". After the calculations of the Romanian authorities, this process should have meant, and somewhat it did, even if not at once and not from the start, the elimination of office workers of the gone horthyst authority, and the appointing in the administrative apparatus politically checked elements, belonging to the one of the politica) group joined in National Democratic Front. After it was extended Lhe competence area of the cleansing legislation of the public administrations, the first measures of the Groza government aimed the office workers who were named by the previous administrations, which are accused because they brought in northern Transylvania, behind the Soviet armies, authorities that wasn't cleansed by fascists elements. Step by step, who managed the issues of the Bihor, Maramureş, Satu Mare and Sălaj Counties, prefects, mayors, notaries, praetors, were eliminated, and in their place was taken over by trustworthy people, no matter their ethnicity. As their loyalty could be proved and verified only by membership to one of the politica) democratic group, those who had a guilty conscious to sell, to clean of to transform were able to move further to important functions. The others, who had kept their verticality, were removed from their services and functions.
