Ordinul meritul agricol. De la idee la înfăptuire (1921-1932)

  • Subiect: The order of agricultural merit. From an idea to its accomplishment (1921-1932) The honours system of the Romanian state developed during the reign of Carol I (1866-1914). By the end of the First World War, national orders and medals, as well as different commemorative decorations had emerged. The post-war government envisaged an Order of Agricultural Merit inspired by the French award of the same name. It was intended to recognise the contribution of those involved in the progress of national agriculture (particularly during a period of great reforms and economical changes). The 1921 initiative remained a project due to political and financial difficulties. In 1926, a new attempt at establishing the award was made by the Ministry of Agriculture, with a beautiful design by the retired officer Constantin Cristescu, a skilled sculptor and engraver, and also a renowned air force hero of the First World War. Unfortunately, this initiative too remained without any results, given the death of King Ferdinand I (1927) and the troubled times of the Regency (1927-1930). The Order of Agricultural Merit was finally instituted in 1932, being only one of a long series of awards modified and instituted during the reign of King Carol II (1930-1940).
