Universitatea românească a Transilvaniei în concepţia lui Simion Bărnuţiu

  • Subiect: The Romanian University of Transylvania in Simion Bărnuţiu's Thinking The political leaders of the Romanians from Transylvania also forwarded to the political Imperial leaders, in Vienna, between the 1st of September 1848 and the 16th of January 1851, four petitions, which all reiterated their demand for a Romanian University; a demand which, up to them, had not been yet admitted. According to Simion Bărnuţiu's ideas, such a Romanian University consisted of four Faculties: for Theology, for Law, for Medicine and for Philosophy. He asserted that, between a nation who was enjoying a University and a nation who did not enjoy such an institution for high culture, there were always three main differences: (1) the nation who was enjoying a University was more enlightened and possessed all the necessary means to step before the other nations; on the contrary, the nation who was lacking such an establishment for culture was a dull one, silly, ignoring its very calling; for such a nation does net possess the enlightened leaders able to show the way of progress. (2) The nation enjoying a University was a strong one; the other was a weak one, wretched, helpless; as knowledge itself was power, and no nation lacking one University could have the means of securing for itself such a power. A nation possessing a University could mix water with fire; it does not run, it flies. The wretched one could never unite ten of its members for the accomplishment of a high task; for from these ten men, one would strive himself towards one direction and another one towards the opposite one (3) the strong nation, enlightened by its University, can thus impose its way and rule the wretched and unenlightened one. How? It has, indeed, very skilled men, experts and specialist, in many fields of activity; it may build enterprises and oblige the nations lacking a University to labor for it, for a proletarian system of wages; and, thus, the former may squeeze the latter and impoverish it up to starvation.
