Palatul domnesc de la Cotroceni- reşedinţă princiară (secolele XVII-XIX)

  • Subiect: The Cotoceni palace – princely residence (17th-19th centuries) The Cotroceni Monastery has been founded at the end of the 17th century by Serban Cantacuzino, prince of Wallachia, being one of the most important monastic Romanian establishments. Within its walls, Serban Cantacuzino built a princely palace, located in the immediate vicinity of Bucharest, the capital of the country, which served as temporary residence for some of the rulers of Wallachia in the 18th-19th centuries. Starting with the middle of the 19th century, at the request of the prince Barbu Stirbei (1849-1856), the Cotroceni Palace became the official summer residence, being reorganised and redecorated with furniture and other European art pieces. Ever since, the Cotroceni ensemble served as summer residence for the following rulers – Alexandru Ioan Cuza (1859-1866), the first prince of the United Romanian Principalities, and Carol of Hohenzollern (1866-1914), who became the first king of Romania in 1881.
