Restaurarea icoanei Sfântul Cuvios Antonie cel Mare – pictură în ulei pe pânză şi ferecătură de argint

  • Subiect: Restoration the icon Sfântul Cuvios Antonie cel Mare – wood painting and silver ornament Unless the entire icon was covered by a precious metal binding, some of the painting’s areas were covered by such metal bindings, out of the justified wish to protect from the worshipers’ direct adoration the icons placed at the passage from the pronaos into the naos, on the northern and southern walls, or at the imperial register in the iconostasis. The bindings were ordered and placed on the icon after it had been painted, sometimes even much later after their being used in church, that is after damage of the frequently touched areas was noticed. Most of the times, the rizas, these protective metal pieces, also have a decorative purpose, due to their elaborate design, being made of silver, hallmarked with the blacksmith’s name or with other abridged information that make it possible to identify the origin and year of fabrication etc.In time, it has been concluded that the protective role of the rizas has only partailly been fulfilled, since very often their contact area with the painting is damaged. Moreover, the various sediments between the paint layer and the metal also engender unwished effects.
