Ştefan Mailat – un fiu al Ţării Făgăraşului care a schimbat atât istoria ei, cât şi a Cetăţii Făgăraş

  • Subiect: Ştefan Mailat, a son Făgăraş County who changed not only its history but also the history of Făgăraş Fortress Ştefan Mailat came from a Romanian boyar family from the Olt County. He was born in Comăna in 1502. In order to obtain Făgăraş Fortress he played on two fronts, changing the sides based on his own interests by supporting at a time both Ferdinand of Habsburg and Ioan Zapolia. Ştefan Mailat allied with the king Ferdinand of Habsburg who rewarded him for his good services in 1527 with the ownership of half of the Făgăraş Fortress, the other half being given to Nadasdi Toma. In that period Transylvania had been allied with Ioan Zapolia, and Mailat who was on Ferdinand of Habsburg’s side, in order to take possession of Făgăraş, sided with Ioan Zapolia (just for show). In 1530 he marries the sister of Toma Nadasdi, Ana, in order to take possession of the other half of the fortress. Toma Nadasdi relinquished his rights on the fortress in favor of his sister and therefore, in 1535, Ştefan Mailat becomes the sole owner of Făgăraş Fortress. Ştefan Mailat was one of the most important political people of Transylvania in the first half of the 16th century.
