Însemnele stărilor Transilvaniei incluse în sigiliile şi monedele principilor autohtoni

  • Subiect: The Symbols of the Transylvanian Estates in the Seals and Coins of the autochthonous Princes The symbols of the three estates of Transylvania were codified as such only in 1659, but they appear much earlier on the seals and coins of the princes. The present paper aims to present these seals and coins only from the period of the autonomous principality of Transylvania, so under the rule of autochthonous princes, until the incorporation of the principality into the Habsburg Empire. The three heraldic elements, which will be discussed, the eagle, the pair of the sun and the crescent and the seven bastions first appeared togethet on the 1580 medallion of Christofor Báthori, voivode of Transylvania, then on the seals and coins of later Transylvanian princes, with the family coat of arms of the current prince. The meaning of the components of the coat of arms of Transylvania was settled on the Transylvanian Diet held in Sebeş/Szászsebes in 1659. The law stated that there should be a rising eagle on the seal of the Transylvanian counties, with the circumscription: SIGILLUM COMITATUUM TRANSYLVANIAE (The seal of Transylvanian counties). The sun and the crescent represented the Székelys/Szeklers, with the circumscription: SIGILLUM NATIONIS SICULICAE (The seal of the Székely/Szekler nation). The seven bastions stood for the Saxon community, with the circumscription: SIGILLUM NATIONIS SAXONICAE (The seal of Saxon nation).
