Matrice sigilare cu simbolurile Principatelor Unite din fostul judeţ Râmnicu Sărat (1859-1868) / Seal Matrices with the United Principalities Symbols From the Former Râmnicu Sărat County

  • Subiect: This paper aims to present 12 circular seal matrices from the collection of the National Archives of Romania, being the first known matrices in the use of the entities belonging to the former Râmnicu Sărat County, with the symbols of the United Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia. It is well known the fact that during the period following the unification of the Moldavia with Wallachia there were in use a large number of types and variants of the armorial representations, due to the lack of accuracy from the heraldic point of view, as well due to the competition between the Moldavian and Wallachian symbols. In our case, ten of the specimens have, as the central element of the die, a modern, French, crowned shield, party per pale, in the dextra division being represented the Wallachian eagle with the head contourné, with a cross in its beak, at the senestra being represented the head of the Moldavian auroch, with a star between the horns. One matrix presents two side by side shields, joined on the chief, loaded with the symbols of the two Principalities and stamped by a single closed crown, and the last one presents the national symbols, next to the local one (a horse), all into the die, not included in a shield. With the exception of the last matrix (year 1868), the year is missing, and the heraldic colours (or, gules and azure) are depicted only on two pieces. The fact that for this area and for this time interval only these 12 matrices with the national symbols could be identified is explained by the widespread use on the seal matrices from the époque of the local symbol - the horse.
