Many of the measures taken prove to have been beneficent, others remained simple palliatives unable to resolve the real problems, especially in the context of grave discrepancies between the rich and the poor. The first Romanian laws were issued during the reign of Matei Basarab. Among the most frequent punishments: beheading, impaling, hands cutting, beating, hanging. Faults were numerous and diversified - gossip, theft, murder, cheating, violence, political revolt a.s.o. Impaling was in use up to the beginnings of the 19th century. Traitors and the revolted were hanged, during Serban Cantacuzino's and Brancoveanu's times. Death sentences were executed preferably in front of a numerous public, as they had mainly an educative purpose.
