Justiţia în Bucureştii de odinioară

Subiect: Law in the Bucharest of Yore Since the Middle Ages, the ruler and several State authorities have shown concern with the strict obedience to norms and customs. Many of the measures taken prove to have been beneficent, others remained simple palliatives unable to resolve the real problems, especially in the context of grave discrepancies between the rich and the poor. The first Romanian laws were issued during the reign of Matei Basarab. Among the most frequent punishments: beheading, impaling, hands cutting, beating, hanging. Faults were numerous and diversified - gossip, theft, murder, cheating, violence, political revolt a.s.o. Impaling was in use up to the beginnings of the 19th century. Traitors and the revolted were hanged, during Serban Cantacuzino's and Brancoveanu's times. Death sentences were executed preferably in front of a numerous public, as they had mainly an educative purpose. The present paper makes a brief analysis of the law activity and trials in Bucharest, during the years 1784-1831.
