  • TITLU în română: Basarabia în secolul al XIX-lea- un bilanţ al evoluţiilor administrative, demografice, economice şi culturale
  • Subiect: The article is dealing with Bessarabia in the 19th century. The author presents a synopsis of the general evolutions between 1812 and 1905 focusing on the jields of demography, administration, economics and cu/ture. The latter embraces developments in church, education and public press. While drawing a general outline the article a/so analyzes the position of the Romanian speaking population. In the year 1812 the region between Prut and Dnjestr became a part of the Russian empire. This marks a tuming point in the history of the region. The article shows that on one hand the time under Russian rule has been marked by modemisation for example in infrastructure, administration and agriculture. Although the demographic and economic data show a positive development at the eve of World War I, the industrial era had nat yet begun in Bessarabia. One the other hand in church, education and press there were exerted strong Russification attempts, which meant among other things limiting the use of the Romanian language in the public sphere, in the church and in educational institutions. It can be concluded that the Romanian speaking population experienced a systematic discrimination in education and administration even though this resulted mainly from its social position as peasants.
