From Spring until Spring. The first reign year of Charles I

  • TITLU în română: Din primăvară în primăvară. Primul an de domnie al lui Carol I
  • Subiect: In spring 1866, Prince Charles of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen became the ruler of the United Principalities of Romania. Putting into effect the conclusions of a plebiscite, regardless of the hostility of certain powers-Austria in the first place-, the prince arrived in Roman ia and was sworn in on 10122 May. He tried to learn of his new country and the people whose support he had won. He adapted very quickly, and he was also beginning to learn the Romanian language. In early summer, he made an oath of allegiance to the Constitution as he upheld it. In the fall, he obtained the confirmation of his election from the Sublime Porte. Meanwhile, des pite the precarious state of the country's roads, he undertook many visits that allowed him to better understand Romania and Romanians, as well as the authorities and notables. He paid a particular attention to Moldova, seeking to alleviate some regional tensions. After the first year of his reign he managed to adapt to a country that was initially completely unknown. His reign of nearly half a century would confirm his success.
