Timisoara in December 1989. Revolution or Externai Plot?

  • Subiect: On December 16th in Maria Square of Timisoara, a solidarity action to support pastor Laszlo Tokes, ends in a mutiny, against Ceausescu regime, standing for an outbreak of discontent towards an oppressive and dictatorial regime. Following a bloody Sunday and two more days of a state of siege, Lorin Fortuna, taking advantage of the outburst of a general strike in all industrial units of the city, announces from the balcony of the Opera House the setting up of the first free political structure, "Frontul Democratic Roman" (the Romanian Democratic Front). Thus, Timisoara becomes the first free city in Romania, and the leaders of the Front launch an appeal towards all the big cities of the country to follow their example. The very same day, Lugoj is the first city to answer the appeal. The following day, Arad, Caransebes, Resita, Cluj, Sibiu, Brasov and Bucuresti do the same. Ceausescu is thus, forced to flee from the top of the building housing the Central Committee of the Romanian Communist Party. Over the years, the events which took place in Timisoara were considered both a spontaneous mutiny changed into a revolution, and a plot coming from outside the country, being led by secret services.
