The Communist Assault an the School. Early Years, 1947-1948

  • Subiect: The Archives of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Public Instruction, which actually contain documents of the Ministry of National Education and of the Ministry of Public Instruction, the titles of the relevant departments in those years, have recently been made available to researchers and the interested public. Certain longstanding appreciations have been confirmed, but it a/so brought an insight into the Romanian school at a turning point in history. The Communist assault on the education system could not succeed in the short term, even if it used commonly-used methods. Its goals were to get rid of undesirables persons and his opponents and joining to high standards of civilization. This ambitious program should have elevated Romanian society to high cultural standards such as ful/ literacy, school extension to 7 years, including the rural area, diversification of secondary school with an emphasis on technical high schools. But its implementation was solved exclusively by means of forced ideology, coercion and repression, so a bright project was completed with dark means. Moreover, in their general strategy, but also in their tactics, the Communists seemed to ignore the economic situation of Romania at that time. It was a country that was stil/ underdeveloped, crushed by a ruthless war and the ruinous debts that followed, with a chronically underfinanced school and consequently without any material resources. The situation was not better either as regards the human resources available, because the change and progress of the school could only be achieved by enhancing its quality, which in those years was far from necessary as hundreds of teachers and teachers were "compressed", harassed and manipulated and in certain situations detained, often without trial, in the communist gulag. Only a few years later, afier repeated analyzes that clearly showed his failure, political leadership weakened the tension and gradually allowed the survivors of the years of repression to retum from where they had been driven away. From the tumult of those years, we retain the heroic effort of a good part of the teaching staff present in schools, people who despite complicated and hostile times, have not betrayed their purpose and eventually saved the school, giving generations of students the chance to make a difference in their lives.
