Ioan Berberianu and the Newspaper „Liberalul Constanţei"

  • Subiect: The present study analyses the extent to which the politics and administration of the city of Constanta were rejlected in the newspaper "Liberalul Constanţei" in the years before and after the First World War. Our choice was well-reasoned. The weekly newspaper appeared from the summer of 1913 to the summer of 1916, in a first series, and, afler the war, from January 1920 to the middle of 1928 in a second series, having, after a decade, over 500 numbers published, with an absolutely remarkable continuity, compared to other publications of the time, mast of them discontinuous and totally ephemeral. „Liberalul Constanţei" meant also a large financial investment, initially supported by party funds (1913-1915), then (1915-1916, 1920-1928), from the resources of a middle-class individual and his family, who financially supported the publication. The reading of the „Liberalul Constanţei" offers the opportunity to talk about the problems of a booming city, it helps to know the life of a man, completely dedicated to the community in which he lived, but, at the same time, we are forced to observe that over ephemeral political regimes or the remarkable advances of technologies, the state administration has proved to be little receptive to any positive change.
