Desemnarea siturilor Ramsar în România

  • Subiect: In the twenty years from the Romania accession to the Ramsar Convention (January 1991), our country was able to propose and obtain official designation of eight wetlands of international importance. Designation process has begun, as was natural, with Danube Delta (May 1991), following a period, long enough, until the next designation of the Small Island of Braila site, in June 2001. The next step was in 2006 year when three sites have received international recognition, namely: Fishery Complex Dumbravita, Mures Floodplaine and Techirghiol Lake. The designation process continues and, in 2011 year, three sites have completed Ramsar list: Iron Gates Natural Park, Poiana Stampei Swamp and Comana Natural Park. The eight designated Ramsar sites occupy an area of 824,897 ha, representing 3.47% of the country, of this 2.72% is occupied by Danube Delta. In terms of the number of Ramsar sites and total area, Romania is still poorly represented, compared with the potential of wetlands owned.
