Contribuţii documentare la istoria iluminatului public în oraşul Oradea

  • Subiect: THE DOCUMENTARY CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE HISTORY OF THE PUBLIC LIGHTING IN THE CITY OF ORADEA The first public lighting of Oradea goes back to 1803. At that time, the streets were illuminated with lamps placed in chandeliers and consoles mounted on the wall. The fuel used was oii, candles and afterwards kerosene (oii, lamp). During 1848-1869, street lamps situated especially at the crossings of the main streets ensured the public lighting. In the year 1870, Haldenby Keyworth John Robert, justice of the peace and agronomist in Lincoln, England, obtained the approval of the Town Council for the insurance of public and domestic lighting in Oradea by setting up the Factory of illuminating alcohol "CAMPBELLS and SANDS". The factory began to function starting with 1873. The illuminates of gas were mounted on cast iron pillars or fixed on the walls of the buildings. The year 1903 brought some important changes in the life of the factory. The illumination based on illuminating gas became obsolete, in favour of those based on electric energy. The new form of energy was produced and supplied by the recently built Uzina Electrică (Power Station). The electric illumination of Oradea has begun a century ago, on the l61 h of December 1903.
