Studiu preliminar asupra resturilor de faună din aşezarea dacică de la Şimleu Silvaniei - "Cetate" - judeţul Sălaj

  • Subiect: Preliminary Report on the Animal Bones of Dacian Site from Simleul Silvaniei „Cetate” (Sălaj County) The Dacian site is placed in the NW of Transilvania, in the Depression of Simleu, on the "Cetate" hill. The present analyses is based on fauna! samples came to light in a Dacian site during the l 990s-1995s excavations. The first part of the article contains a description of bones yielded by fourteen fosses (761 fragments) and four dwellings (1.326 bones), tables 2 - 4. Overall the fauna! samples of the fosses are not numerous, each one accounting below I 00 bones, even 5-7 ones, excepting 028 (in Romanian symbol for fosse) with 189 fragments. Most of them are garbage pits but those with 5 - 7 remains. Whenever ritual depositions were not recorded. Their character is questionable. The samples of the dwellings represent undisturbed deposits, in a relatively good state of preservation. Almost all of bones are burnt, inclusively those of horse. The second part of the paper contains a brief discussion of the species and their employment in the community diet. A broad analysis will be presented on another occasion because the faunal assemblages are to be completed during the next excavations in the settlement. The exploitation of pig and caprovines reached high proportions during site function: 33-35% pig and 8-13% small ruminants. As for bovines their decreasing to 21 % is correlated with a significant quota of pig. Regarding the animal husbandry, it seems that pig and caprovines were used mostly for meat excepting goat and cattle used for byproducts. The horse was most probably eaten as his bones emphasize. About 30% is the quota of hunted mammals, including wild swine (16 - 17%), red deer (8%), roe deer, aurochs, brown bear and beaver. Some complete bones furnished values of withers heights for oxen 117 cm, sheep 61- 63 cm, pig 63-76 cm (average - 71 cm), horse 128 - 136 cm and wild swine 91 - 112 cm (average -I 00.9 cm). The animal measurements are in size range with other Dacian sites from Transylvania (Sighisoara) or Banat (Divici, Stenca Liubcovei, Pecica). The third part includes tables with species frequencies and measurements of cattle, caprovine, pig, red deer, horse bones.
